Grandma’s History

Here is the download link to Grandma’s History voice recording.

Grandma Willie in the foreground and Grandaddy in the background at their church on Easter Sunday. I can’t imagine Grandma doing a selfie, so I can only assume that my sister Jennifer possibly took this picture.

I attended Sacramento State University. During my time there I took an African American History class taught by a great professor. One of her assignments was to interview 2 persons from a specific time period. We were to ask a vague, open-ended question to the person and then allow them to answer it however they chose without us prodding them along. The following voice is that of my grandmother.

Since this was an assignment I didn’t think to record her on a separate device than the same computer I was typing on. I, like most people, didn’t value the moment. I never thought that this may be the last recording of her voice. I never thought that perhaps she would provide an important slice of history. I never thought that this would be something that my future child would want to hear. We take so many things for granted and this was one of those times.

Please forgive the clickety-clack of the keyboard. I was typing out what she said as she spoke so that I could get the assignment done. I’ll try to find the written version of this. That will take a lot more digging. Love you much.

CraftTime w/ LiLiPoofz

CraftTime w/ LiLiPoofz

Welcome to CraftTime w/ LiLiPoofz

We are so excited to roll out some exciting new things here at LiLiPoofz.  So many of my wonderful customers have asked for tutorials on how to make various DIY items.  Thus began CraftTime w/ LiLiPoofz.  Some request range from simple to  complex.  Our cameras are rolling as we rush to buy the items needed for our content.  Each of our videos will be right here so you can follow along.  We love to bargain shop, so we will share some of our secrets that allow us to keep our items affordable.  Not only will you learn a great DIY tutorial, but you will walk away with the knowledge of how to turn it into a money maker for yourself if necessary.

 Why you ask?

Well one simple reason.  We at LiLiPoofz believe in EMPOWERMENT.

There used to be time where all skills were passed down from generation to generation.  People learned from the others that surrounded them.  Through oppressive systems, we have forgotten our way and our culture.  We hope that these tutorials will help pave the way back to reclaiming the art from within.

We want to elevate you as we our elevated.  The world is big, we can’t handcraft all of the things that the people of the world consume, right?  It is imperative to teach what we know so that the generation behind us are also able to do things with their hands.  So why not have fun?  Let’s live, craft, and learn together.

Baby/Child and Me Component

We are all things LiLiPoofz, that means that my little one is going to be involved (rather I like it or not.) I have found when I give my baby small tasks that she is far more agreeable to “helping”, then when I scoff and rebuke her. Many of these activities become small learning experiences that she will have for a lifetime. I wish to gear some of these tutorials to be crafty friendly for the little hands. We will reserve some of our tutorials for parent relaxation time as well.

At the completion of each unit, we will have a giveaway of some of the items that we make.  How fun is that?  So come along and join the Crafty Fun with LiLiPoofz.

Here is what we are working on for you:

  • Badge Reels (Requested by Kandace and Mika)
  • Building a newborn diaper stash from items in the home. (Requested by Aisha)
  • Small hair barrettes and bows (Requested by )
  • What to do with all of those scraps (LiLiPoofz)
  • How to store away those pesky bobbins (LiLiPoofz)

Black History Series-LiLiPoofz Black History Bibs

LiLiPoofz Black History Bibs

Our inspiration for this series was the passing of our beloved Prince and Black History Month. I chose two more strong black people who lived, was influential, and died during the course of my lifetime to feature on our LiLiPoofz bibs.

Here is what my customers receive who purchase these one of a kind treasures.

Click on the names in order to be taken to the store to purchase a bib.

Each of the bibs that I designed have personal significance to me.  Each person represented on the bib made a difference in the perspective and trajectory of my life.  Though there are choices in their lives that I may not have entirely agreed with, something else stood out like the amber-like fire in the eye of an animal as it gleams in the dark.

Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why
the Caged Bird Sings” spoke of tragedies that no child should ever go through.  I read this and many of her poems as a young girl, and it resonated in me.  I began writing poetry, songs, and short stories as a way of escape from my childhood.

Prince stood against the record labels even at the prince bibtender age of 17.  He demanded control of his
music.  He understood that slavery was beyond money.  His life reminds me to not accept any type of oppression.  I can not be bought nor sold.

Ella Fitzgerald inspired me to sing despite how others may perceive me as a person.  She was not the ideal beauty in her time.  That did not stop her from sharing her art.  Heavy, black, woman, eventually blind and old, she continued to tour until her death.  She taught me that you are never too anything to achieve your dreams.

Black History is more than the celebration of the liberation of black people from systemic oppression but also for those who pioneered against other types of oppressions as well, and this is why I loved each and every one of these wonderful Black Heroes.
